John Crompton's career spans four decades across investment banking and public service. He began at HM Treasury, working on the privatisation programmes of the Thatcher era, then spent two decades at Morgan Stanley in London, New York and Hong Kong, ultimately as deputy head of the firm's UK business. He went on to lead the global Equity Capital Markets and Corporate Finance groups at HSBC.

He twice returned to public service: as HM Treasury's senior corporate finance advisor, and as Head of Market Investments at UK Financial Investments, managing the taxpayers' stakes in Lloyds and RBS after the financial crisis. He is a co-author of Public Net Worth: Accounting, Government and Democracy, a Foundation Fellow of University College, Oxford, and a mentor at the Blavatnik School of Government.
